Break Free from People-Pleasing: Find Your True Self
Do you ever make a decision, only to immediately seek validation from everyone around you? You find yourself asking, “Is this okay?” and end up trusting their opinions more than your own.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. This habit is a common sign that you’re living in the past a place often filled with guilt. The good news is that you can learn to live from your future: a place of freedom, confidence, and self-trust.
In this post, we’ll explore three practical tips to help you bridge the gap from the guilt of the past to the freedom of your future.
Why We Seek External Validation
This need for approval often stems from a mix of guilt and people-pleasing, patterns usually programmed in childhood. As children, we learn to look outward for cues on what is “right” or “good.” We carry these learnings into adulthood, and they grow into a deeply ingrained habit: the habit of trusting others instead of ourselves.
Breaking this cycle isn’t about becoming selfish; it’s about coming home to your own intuition. Here’s how to start.
Tip 1: Pause and Consult Your Feelings First
Before you rush to ask someone else if your decision is okay, create a moment of pause. In that space, ask yourself two simple questions:
- Do I trust this decision?
- How does it feel in my body?
Your feeling is your guiding force your gut instinct. To practice, start with a small, low-stakes decision, like what you’re going to wear tomorrow.
Instead of texting a friend for approval, ask yourself, “How do I feel when I imagine wearing this?”
Pay attention to the sensation. Does it feel light, expansive, and good? Or does it feel tight, constrictive, and doubtful? By becoming aware of your own feelings, you’ll start to recognize the distinct physical signal of your own trust. Your feelings are not your enemy; they are your internal guidance system, helping you navigate life authentically.
Tip 2: Take a Bold Step with Your Self-Trust
Discovering the feeling of self-trust is the first step. The next is to act on it. This is where you build your “self-trust muscle.”
Let’s continue with the clothing example. You’ve checked in with your feelings and decided on an outfit that feels good to you. Now, the crucial part: wear it and walk outside.
You might feel a pull to change your mind at the last second. This is the old habit kicking in. Instead, consciously take that feeling of self-trust and take a small, bold step with it. Walk to your mailbox, go to the grocery store, or simply step outside for a few minutes.
This action reinforces a new neural pathway. It teaches you that you can not only identify your truth but also act on it. With each small step, you prove to yourself that your own trust is enough.
Tip 3: Embrace That Not Everyone Will Agree
The final key is to make peace with a universal truth: you cannot control how other people respond to you.
You’ve asked yourself for guidance, you’ve taken an action based on your truth, and then… someone says, “I don’t agree with that,” or gives you a disapproving look.
This is the moment of truth. The third key is to be okay with their disagreement.
There are over 8 billion people on the planet, each with unique experiences, beliefs, and perspectives. It is not only impossible but unnecessary for everyone to share your point of view. Your truth is valid because it is yours.
Respecting others does not mean abandoning yourself. It means holding your truth with confidence while allowing others the space to hold theirs. This builds incredible courage over time.
Your Journey to a More Relaxed, Confident You
Stepping into the world of self-trust is a courageous and liberating journey. It’s about trading the tense, uncertain feeling of people-pleasing for the relaxed confidence that comes from trusting yourself.
It’s time to stop feeling guilty when your truth differs from someone else’s. Start exploring the unique, powerful person you are. By practicing these three steps pausing to feel, acting on your trust, and embracing disagreement you will build the clarity and confidence to live a life you truly enjoy.
